THE AUTHOR. I found this novel to be an excellent way to get acquainted with Jeffery Deaver, author of 34 novels, 7 of them nominated for Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America. He has also garnered dozens of other awards and been published in 25 languages, books selling in almost every country in the world. I found his writing to be skilled, surprising twists in the plot, and short descriptions of characters and settings that are sharp and stick in one's imagination.THIS NOVEL. Perhaps a short novel such as this one doesn't do his skills and imagination justice. He is forced to use too much narration rather than showing us through action. The development of the plot seems to be hurried. But nevertheless it is an intricate plot, pitting criminals against criminals and police, and even police against police. In the middle of all of that is the crime novelist himself, involved innocently enough in gang warfare but greatly endangered as the crime progresses. Because of "short read" constraints and the plot at times seeming forced, I enjoyed this book and getting acquainted with a renowned author worth following.I was intrigued by a more subtle conflict: between a novelist who lets his characters develop the story and a novelist who is very much into a well-planned plot.
If you've got an hour or so to kill waiting for a train or plane, this noir novella might keep you distracted. Unfortunately, there is not much else to recommend it.Despite his extensive list of writing credits, Jeffrey Deaver's 2017 tale, "Surprise Ending", is somewhat underwhelming. It reads more like a script than a well-crafted piece of fiction. The Baltimore setting is not well presented, the characters familiar placeholders and the plot development goes through predictable motions.While at a writer's conference in Baltimore, acclaimed mystery writer, Alan Seybold, finds himself entangled with police efforts to bring down a local paranoid mob boss running an opioid racket among other enterprises. Alan’s ambition and ego cannot let him rest so he engages.The police detective in charge, Brad Reynolds (like Kevin Spacey in the movie, "LA Confidential"), has the bright idea of using freelance help - Seybold - to capture the head of the regional mob, Andre Hector Federico, before going after the rival mob figurehead, Jack Kelley.In his one main scene, Federico might remind you of Brando as Vito Corleone just based on what he is doing and wearing. And if you have seen the 1973 dark, dark Boston mob movie, "The Friends of Eddie Coyle", you might pick up a resemblance between Peter Boyle's film role and Jack Kelley. Other characters are one-dimensional and have the required pulp fiction quality.To its credit, there are a couple of twists delivering on the eponymous book title. And the main character does have a “how did I get myself into this†awakening without realizing the big picture. That’s about it.If you want read a more intricate twisty plot with an education on ways to hoodwink people, try the 2007 novel, “Con Edâ€. Surprise EndingJeffery DeaverA Deaver short story is like chess played like speed dating. The real clues and the red herrings swim together very fast. There is little time to get inside a character or the author's spinning wheel of a mind.I was sure that I had correctly anticipated the final plot twist but, alas, I was wrong.Let's just say that the title is quite apropos.Well done, Deaver.
Jeffrey Deaver never fails to entertain and amaze me with his incredible story telling abilities. This short story was no exception and, as usual, with Deaver the ending surprised & delighted this reader. If you love mysteries and you're not reading Deaver you should be!
Yes, it was a “Surprise Ending.†Perhaps a synopsis for a TZ episode titled “A Twist Too Many?†You be the judge.
This is basically a frivolous book, and not a very good one. The plot of two authors working for people to conquer the the forces of good or evil is just too thin. The dialogue is thin. The characters have no depth. There is basically nothing to justify the waste of money or time on this effort.
Being a huge fan Deaver having read a number of his novels, I was anxious to read another one of his short stories. Fast paced and expertly written, this story verified the title's name.
This was a very intriguing account of an author trying to imitate his mysteries. The surprise ending was very much that a great surprise. Very good read.
