Review

"While it is known that Fannye Cook wrote Mississippi's first game laws and served as the first director of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, we have never been able to fully comprehend the hard work and sacrifice that was required for her to achieve such feats. Fannye Cook: Mississippi's Pioneering Conservationist shows the reader how, against adversaries at every turn, Ms. Cook's tenacity and passion for Mississippi's wildlife would not be denied. To this day, her dedication to conservation continues to inspire biologists and researchers from across the country, including the one writing these words. She is truly the foundation of conservation in Mississippi and the fruits of her labors will be seen for generations to come. The people and wildlife of this state owe her a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid."--Brad Young, executive director, Mississippi Wildlife Federation

In full disclosure, I knew Miss Cook when I was growing up in Mississippi because she mentored my father, W.H. "Bill" Turcotte with whom she worked at the Mississippi Game and Fish Commission. The author and I corresponded while she was writing the book and unfortunately passed away before publication. My memories are accurately recorded as are those of many others. Until I read the exhaustively-researched book, I had no idea of the breadth and depth of her contributions to the American wildlife conservation effort. What was incredible to me was that she did most of her work in Mississippi under the worst conditions imaginable including a Great Depression, gender bias, no master's degree, and a wildlife population that had nearly been wiped out by market hunting and clear cutting of timber. If she were alive today, she would have been a recipient of a Macarthur Foundation award. She was to Mississippi conservation and natural science what Aldo Leopold was to the world. The book is filled with detail written in clear, simple prose indexed and sourced as an academic piece. Bravo to authors--the late Dorothy Shawhan and Libby Hartfield. This is a must read for students of wildlife management and Mississippi history.
