I read through the book once, and I reviewed both online practice tests the day of the exam. I passed with a 57. I felt like a lot of definitions on the test were the same as in the book, BUT the test frequently used terms that didn't match the book to name the definitions. I would recommend getting the book and looking over practice tests answers and explanations the day of or before the exam. I had no prior knowledge in this subject area, and this is the only study resource I used.
If you CLEP Psychology first, most of this will be review with some added names and concepts. Doing it in this order, it only took a few weeks of study to pass the CLEP. I love the practice tests.
Helped me pass with a week of studying!!!! Do not be surprised if you do badly on the practice exams. I did not do well on the REA practice exams but scored in the high 50's on the actual CLEP exam. I did supplement some with Instacert flash cards; however, this book was great for providing vocabulary that I needed to know for the CLEP . Highly recommend!
Overpriced, but a good reflection of what will be on the exam. Take an hour to skim the book, take another hour or so to do the practice tests (you probably won't need the full allotted time), then take an hour to review your answers with REA's commentary. If you have some common sense and are good at standardized tests, that will be more than enough to pass (scaled score > 50). If you lack those qualities, you may need to work harder and use a real sociology book.I skimmed the first chapter of the book, got a 64 scaled score on the first full practice test, 70 on the second, skimmed the rest of the book, and then got a 66 on the real exam. I do feel that skimming the book was at least slightly useful towards ensuring a passing grade, though reviewing the practice tests was more important. I had no prior knowledge of sociology beyond what one picks up reading the newspaper.Note that the online versions of the practice tests, which I recommend over the paper versions, are not free if you buy this book; they are discounted to be a total of ~$3.
This book isn't really in-depth enough to pass the CLEP in my opinion. However, the practice tests and answers are quite useful. So in that sense, I would say it's worth getting a copy.
This book was not at all helpful. The structure is just terrible. Sentences that run on for 5 or 6 lines trying to explain multiple conflicting theories. With very few applied examples to help clarify the poorly explained theory.
This is the only source I used and I passed!
I have taken other CLEP exams using this publisher and I was so disappointed in this book. I did pass the CLEP, but with no help at all from this book. The CLEP had a lot of questions relating directly to the United States and ethnic relations, which this book is way too broad. Nothing was related to what I ready.... Save your money!
