This book takes complex technical and political issues and communicates them in a thoroughly understandable fashion. The book is up to date, thought provoking and provides a huge index into other sources of information. If there is one book you choose to provide an entry point into the issues surrounding nuclear weapons politics then Dr Futter's book is highly recommended.
For the past few years I've been teaching a course on the evolving nuclear threat. It's a "nuclear 101" course that covers the waterfront on a number of contemporary nuclear security and proliferation related challenges, while also delving into the history of the nuclear threat. I have found this to be the PERFECT book for the course. It covers all the key topics taught in the class, and in fact I've structured a good deal of the syllabus around the various chapters. It's perfect for acquainting the student with these issues, without overwhelming them. Written clearly, dispassionately, and comprehensively, and each chapter provides recommendations for further reading.I have truly found this to be the perfect book for facilitating classroom discussion, and I'm so glad I found it. Given how the world is evolving so rapidly in areas related to this topic, I hope a second edition will be forthcoming soon. Even if that is not the case, however, I highly recommend this book as a means to introduce the student (or anyone) to the diversity of issues and concerns associated with nuclear weapons challenges.
