About the Author
Neil Abramson is a partner in a Manhattan law firm, and his wife is a veterinarian. Abramson is also a past board member of the Animal Legal Defense Fund, an award recipient from the ASPCA for his legal work on behalf of animals, a founding member of the New York City Bar Association Committee on Legal Issues Relating to Animals, and once represented a dolphin named Kama as a plaintiff in federal court.

Helena Colden, a veterinarian recently died of cancer – nonetheless is the narrator of the story and she describes the relationship we have with our pets and the way they communicate with us , additionally if chimpanzees can communicate through sign language and words . Her lawyer husband , David , has been left to care for the three dogs, two horses, multiple cats, and a pig . When Jaycee asked him to defend her and Cindy, a chimp who she has taught, against the Center for Advanced Primate Studies and their desire to shut down her research and move Cindy back to the general primate population, David questions the legality of Cindy's rights , since she is not human .it' s only when he sees his beloved Helena on video, assisting Jaycee and communicating with Cindy, does he choose to compromise his career to defend her. It was an interesting method to tell the story through Helena, who observes and is in all places simultaneously, bringing action and anticipation to each part and brings the reader into each scene. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it had a great message.

The animals were her passion, but David feels an obligation to carry on with their care.Jaycee, a friend and colleague of Helena’s, asks David to defend her and Cindy, a chimpanzee, against the Center for Advanced Primate Studies. Jaycee has taught the chimp how to communicate through sign language and other aids. The Center feels the study has failed and plans to return Cindy to the primate population for other experimental work, likely to test human diseases.Still grieving, David is overwhelmed with obligations to his law practice, running the household, and now being asked to take on a questionable case of animal rights. Out of respect for Helena, he consents to defend Jaycee and the chimp, Cindy.This story is told from an interesting point of view, that of a deceased person who can be everywhere at once, one who sees and hears all.This novel touched my heart with the many animal scenes, particularly those with a little autistic boy, the son of David’s newly acquired housekeeper. If you are an animal lover, this is a book for you. I have had and loved animals all my life and this book was balm for my soul. I thoroughly enjoyed Unsaid and highly recommend it.
LET ME PREFACE THIS WITH "IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS ANIMAL LOVER, THEN HAVE SOME TISSUES ON HAND!" From the beginning of this book to the end I found myself constantly crying uncontrollably, and saying, (to myself of course) this is ridiculous why am I feeling this way? I could go into all of the animals I've had and loved (dogs, cats, tarantulas, lizards, snakes, birds etc.. I was a Science teacher.) However, I realized I was crying for me and how much I missed all of them. Harry was a German Short hair Pointer who I had laid quietly next to for an hour while and after I had to put him down. I promised myself after my first dog Zachary (whom I kept alive for six weeks FOR ME!) That I would never do that to an animal again. As soon as I saw Harry's quality of life going down, I knew. It was hard but you just know. This should be on every animal lovers reading list. I'm so glad I read it! BY THE WAY, THE DOG ON THE FRONT OF THIS BOOK LOOKS LIKE MY FIRST DOG ZACHARY, (he died in my arms, something I'll probably never forgive myself for-keeping him alive for me!)
At times, almost too sad to read, but the premise and sub-plots of this novel compel the reader to stay the course. A fascinating view of a post-death existence which allows a main character to observe those left behind was both fascinating and significant to the evolving tale.As an avid animal lover, this reader has no doubt that (many/most) animals are sentient, and indeed, have souls. The depiction of a heartless, bureaucratic abuse of Cindy the chimpanzee and the scientist who loved her was markedly disturbing. To give balance to Cindy's plight, other animal characters were portrayed in more favorable environments in their unique relationships with humans.The author beautifully describes the mutually beneficial blessings derived from sharing one's life with another species. Any human who has experienced such never forgets the profound impact of that bond.
I've read lots of books about smart dogs (really smart), and birds, even octopuses, and, of course, chimpanzees. This one is primarily about a smart chimpanzee, not a dog. The book was OK and I finished it. The ending wasn't wonderful, not necessarily because it was good or bad, but because the resolution wasn't believable. Granted, this scenario is probably something that couldn't have happened, but If an author has worked it right, the reader is empathetic enough to "willingly suspend disbelief."
