This book was required for my Oracle class. It explained concepts well.
This book is good for beginner and intermediate users. When I bought the book last year, I was intermediate SQL and beginner Oracle. On my previous database projects, I used SQL Server and Sybase and used GUIs to create my tables and relationships. My current project requires PL/SQL scripts that can be run in batch. Since I had done a lot of DML (Data Manipulation Language, e.g., SELECT), little DDL (Data Definition Language, e.g., CREATE TABLE), and virtually no Oracle, I needed help! This book rescued me.This is now my main reference for SQL, and especially Oracle-specific SQL. It has many examples of SQL for specific basic tasks. Not system administration tasks, mind you, but DML and DDL. These examples are the biggest strength. Oracle's syntax flowcharts and O'Reilly's "SQL In A Nutshell" are fine, but I need examples. "Show me".One last note: the book is a SQL book, not a PL/SQL book. If you need to do PL/SQL you will need another PL/SQL-specific book.

I needed a refresher to my SQL knowledge and this book was put together extremely well given other books I've studied. I powered through it with ease. I'm always elated when someone values their craft so highly.

There are some things it doesn't cover, but it's a good basis for Oracle SQL. There's definitely some topics you'll have to look up, but it's given me most of what I need to learn about it.
This book covers many details not only regarding SQL and PL/SQL, but also on connecting to a server. I've done college coursework on databases and had to struggle through learning to use the environment (SQLPlus). This book wouldn't have changed my grades, but even the first chapter would have made the classes easier (answers questions even the experienced instructor didn't know ^_^). Anyone taking database coursework at UMUC should purchase this as well. ;)By the way, if you're buying the Kindle version, there is a CDRom that came with the book version which is not delivered through the Kindle digital download. You can find that material here:[...]I'm deducting one star because it would have been very simple for someone to put that link in, or find SOME way to offer the information on the CD rather than making us hunt for it. The book isn't completely useless without the CD - but it is greatly crippled.
I bought this book blindly, going off others reviews. When I got it and started to run the practice examples, I found that many of them don't work as the author didn't take into account the relational database model when creating his examples. For example, at the very beginning where he talks about deleting a row from the database, having followed the book line for line up to that point, the example he gives throws an integrity constraint as the customer he is attempting to remove has purchases in the purchases table. I had two other people verify that they get the same results when trying to run this example.The DBA at the company I work for also told me that I wasted my money and that I should not use this book to learn from. I should return the book if i still can.
