I've had aquariums successfully for many years. Part of my success I attribute to thorough research from both the internet and many books such as this one.This is a great book with limitations. Not all freshwater fish are included; 300 of the most popular species are included in this book. What is available is great info such as fish behavior, water conditions it needs, full size of the fish and more. I give this book five stars because it contains so much info that many other aquarium books don't. Many books don't tell you what water a fish needs to live comfortably in, this one does.If you are looking for a book that tels you what you need to know about a fish you are thinking of purchasing, or want to learn about what fish to buy for your tank, this is a good book to purchase.
This book is 6.25 x 7.25 inches. I like the size of it. It is full of pictures of each fish, gives a profile of the fish, its size, what it costs, what it eats, what water chemistry it likes, what temperature it likes, compatibility with other fish and many other vital facts about it. Covers about 200 varieties. A helpful reference for me. My 4 yr old grandson loves to look at the book with me. He is fasinated with all these fish. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who are interested in learning all about fish or planning to purchase some for their aquarium. For everybody else, it is just a fun and entertaining book.
This book is loaded with lots of facts about the most common tropical fish. It was a big help in planning my two small tanks. The lady at the fish store even said, "That sounds like a perfect selection for a 12-gallon tank. You have bottom, middle, and top level fish that all will work well together." I used this book and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Freshwater Aquariums and felt like the advice was good. You likely won't get the same advice at the pet stores or even the fish stores from any two people, so a good book is a useful tool. I wish I had always stuck with the book and waited longer to get the right fish, rather than listening to the nice people at the fish store.
Impressive that each section is written by an expert on that type of fish; Cichlids, Barbs, Live bearers, etc. Many old favorites plus some more exotic choices for the home aquarium. Good photos, easily understood information. A page per fish, with info and photo plus a few of the more popular fish have extra pages and photos. Perfect for kids, beginners and even old hands looking for a colorful reference. Much better price here on Amazon than buying at store. Very happy I got it to companion my old Innes book.
This book offers a convenient, quick reference for fishes. The images are very good and the bullet-point style is great if you are looking for something specific such as native origin or pH requirements. It would be nice if there were a bit more background text and such. This book is good for what it is intended for but it's page after page of fishes from front to back with no real intro or conclusion, etc.
After visiting three public libraries in my area and realizing I had more books on tropical fish aquariums then all three combined, I started shopping for new, updated books. I have a couple of books that are really good, but this one has become my favorite. As a total beginner, I wanted something easy, yet concise. This book has very complete information that others were missing and it's compact so I can bring it with me to the pet stores and quickly find what I'm looking for, while browsing fish. Highly recommended if you're just starting out. As a personal note, I no longer live in Guam. The libraries I visited were in somewhat rural TN.
Good book. Its only fault is that it does not list all the fish commonly found in pet stores but that may be because new breed fish are being added often. The book has all the information needed though such as temperment, type of water (ph, temperature, etc.). I reference often when shopping.
I got this book because I'm getting my son his first fish tank and I wasn't really sure what kind of fish to buy,Therefore I purchased this book. It's a great book but I only saw two fishes that I found that could be together because of the fish water temperatures, behaviors and food. But I probably will expand my fish tank I only have a 5.5 Gallon and most of the fishes in this book needs to be in a bigger fish tank with lots of plants. This tank is for a 3 year old so for now its 5.5 gallon. I would recommend this book if you have a really big fish tank.
My son has read this book cover to cover and is now quizzing me. This book has given him a very good knowledge base to start his first aquarium. The book covers all the essentials that are required to start and maintain a happy aquarium community. The price suggestions for the fish are not great as our economy has caused the pricing to fluctuate. As with any investment shop around. If you need a book with the basics on fish this is a good starting base.
