I liked the end. It had the potential of being sappy...but it wasn't.Listen, I like Dugoni. I've read several of his books, to include the 5 book Tracy Crosswhite series. "Bodily Harm" is not in the same vein, quality wise, as the Crosswhite series. It just isn't. The story line is difficult to follow in places. Some of that difficulty is due to flash backs, which, I will admit is set off by italics, so we know when that is taking place. In another respect, there were times when I just didn't know who was talking. There were scene changes that at times were confusing, given what was going on otherwise at the time.. I also think that some of the dialogue was unnecessary to further the story line.I don't retell story lines in my reviews, but have to say the overall read was "wordy" in places.I thought the plot was relevant and was well developed. The characters were fleshed out, both protagonists and antagonists There was certainly rising action, falling action and a resolution, which as I say above came dangerously close to being "sappy" but Dugoni cleaned it up in the end, which was good.Again, I liked the book, as I do like this writer's style in the way he tells a story. But must confess that Tracy Crosswhite is his bench mark in writing, not this read.
I have read, so far, all of Mr. Dugoni's books. While it's hard to choose which series I like best, I can honestly say that this one is the best. It made me cry, which I never have done while reading a book. It also made me believe that we still have good, unselfish people in the world. In today's world, we need to remember that more than ever. Thank you for the book and the story about your Dad.
The first two David Sloan books were excellent. Bodily Harm was even better. (I read Murder One first and it's the best!) Bodily Harm will break your heart in many ways, in the story about the children who died, the others who died who tried to do the right thing, and David's personal tragedy. It has its uplifting message as well. Sloan's partnership/friendship with Charles Jenkins is particularly touching given David's personality and his tendency to keep people at arms length. These are smart, capable men who go to any length to get at the truth. This is a smooth thriller that is well written and moves along with action and suspense on every page. The character development, particularly of Sloan and Jenkins, is excellent. Bodily Harm is a wonderful novel - you'll love it!!!
Mr. Dugoni takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that lasts long after you read the last word on the last page. David Sloane and Charles Jenkins meet the one adversary who just may be able to take them both down. There is so much to this novel, action, courtroom drama, greed and kindness, evil...but mostly love. It may seem a strange thing to say about a book so packed with action and intrigue, but read this book and then try to tell me I'm wrong.
This is the third installment of Robert Dugoni's series featuring David Sloane, a Seattle attorney, who has a reputation for never losing a civil case.When we last read about David, he had finally found the love of his life and was about to adopt her 13 year old son, Jake. They lived in a great house and life was good, and it looked like it would get even better.As the book opens, David is about to go into the courtroom to hear the verdict of his current medical malpractice case against a pediatrician that he believed to be responsible for the unnecessary death of a six year old. Before David can open the doors, a young man comes up to him and tells him that the doctor was NOT the reason the child died.This seemingly delusional information caused David some discomfort, and yet he had to continue to the end of this case, despite his misgivings, and ended up with a favorable verdict.The thing that blows this whole thing up in the water for David is that he finds out that another child died with the same symptoms, and David chooses to investigate matters further.Enter Kendall Toys. A toy mfg that has been around for almost 100 years, and unbeknownst to the general public and Board, has turned to China to manufacture the next great toy since Elmo. The lengths to which the owners cover up potentially damanging information is beyond belief. And yet, David keeps pursuing them, to find out the truth about this children's deaths, and to prevent any future harm to innocent children.This story is a bit short on the trademark courtroom scenes that I have come to like about Dugoni's stories, and some of the action and characters are a bit too cliched. There are some very powerful and emotional parts to the story that make up for some of this, but not all. Dugoni's portrayal of Sloane's pursuit of the villains is a bit silly and he knocks off characters as if they were cut-outs in a shooting gallery.I did enjoy the fictional inside workings of a toy mfg and got a bit creeped out thinking about all the recent recalls for the toys that were made in China. Like most of us, I have children and grandchildren and can't even keep up with all the latest recalls.Overall, I felt this book was a good read, and while some of the characters were not believable, this story had a lot about it that made it interesting and entertaining.
I started out reading the Tracy Crosswise mysteries and really enjoyed them. Then I found the David Sloan mysteries, and am enjoying them as well. Unfortunately, I read them out of order, not realizing that "Conviction" was not the first. I'm now reading book 4 in the series. Looking forward to more of Robert Dugoni's books.
I found it difficult to read and not entertaining. This was due to the way the childen in the book were treated and exploited. I did finish it but found the ending "wrap up" was a little unbelievable.
Enjoyable read. Somehow I missed all other books in this series and started with this one. I can't complain though because it still worked quite well. This book didn't suffer at all by missing the previous books. I'm sure my experience would have been a little better had I read the previous releases but there isn't much I can do about that now.I can't recommend this book enough. Even though the ending went a little different than I was hoping, it was still satisfying and worked quite well. Thanks to the author for providing this story.
